"Michigan's Upper Peninsula is heating up as a golf destination with the
opening of Sweetgrass Golf Club
."   - GOLF Magazine

The name Sweetgrass refers to an aromatic herb, a sacred plant used in Indian peace and healing rituals, and is found along the course.

Paul Albanese of Plymouth, Michigan-based Albanese & Lutzke architectural firm, designed the 18-hole championship golf course.  Albanese has previously worked on such notable projects as:

  Timberstone in Iron Mountain MI
  Mill Creek in Rochester NY
Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville NY
Moose Ridge in South Lyon MI
  Quail Ridge in Ada MI
Traditions Golf Club in Edmond OK

The course will play from approximately 7,300 to 5,000 yards and will feature multiple teeing areas to accommodate every player's unique skill level.

Holes are named after, and pay homage to, Indian legend.  The Island green, which jibes with the casino's name and fits within the parameters of the land's dedicated design, meshes with Potawatomi legend, which holds the turtle and its wisdom in high esteem.  The challenging par-3 Island green is surrounded by a bed of rock outcroppings and resembles the renowned creature.

Experience a truly dramatic Biarritz green on the par-3 12th.

Sand bunkers and water hazards strategically defend the course, while shimmering fescue frames the wide fairways.

Historic bridges "rescued" from around the region lend the course a unique feel.

Prevailing winds add additional drama to the memorable design and round of golf.

Beautifully crafted rockwork and cedar log creations throughout the course.

Known as the "Keepers of the Fire," the Hannahville Band of the Potawatomi Nation will honor legend by featuring a continuous flame next to the 10th tee box.

Hole #15 Island Green.  The signature hole.  This par 3 is a true island with an historic bridge connecting it to land.  While the green is of extremely generous size, the water and prevailing breezes can play on a golfer's mind.

Hole 17
Par 4 with rock upthrust in foreground which pays homage to the Turtle that is an important part of the Potawatomi culture.  This hole is unique because it offers a total of eight seperate tee boxes.  This presents two completely different tee areas, one of which is straightaway and the other a challenging carry over wetlands.  Historical bridge in background leads to holes 9 and 18.

Long par 4 sweeping left to right with a second shot to an elevated green.

Hole 18 shares a huge undulating green with the #9 hole.  A truly majestic
finishing hole with the ponds and beautiful waterfalls.
